Example Business Website - Analysis

This is an example business report provided to all Search Engine Promotion clients on a monthly basis. Three reports are provided, the first report outlines the quality of the site and report errors, broken links and other issues. It allow us to maintain the continuity of the website at all times and monitor any potential disruptions caused by errors. The second report is the Ranking Analysis, this report provides a comprehensive position analysis of your website in the Search Engine results for chosen search engines, usually Google Australia and International (if require), Yahoo and MSN. The last report is the Indexed Pages Report. This report provides an overview on pages indexed with the chosen Search Engines.

See below for example report.

Site Quality Overview

This report shows that of 26 pages in the site checked, almost all of them are older than 3 months. Eight of them are also slow pages - meaning they are graphically heavy or just too much content on the page. Slow pages take longer than the average user is willing to wait to download and may cause them to give up and leave the page, or even the site.

There are many missing alt tags on images though the site. Alt (alternative) tags are what the user sees when they browse the internet with images turned off, in place of the image. They are also used to add keywords to a page and create keyword density, which is important for page indexation.

The site also currently has a number of broken internal links.

Ranking Analysis

The website ranks poorly under the more obvious search terms. Given the age of the site (three years), it should be ranking well for at least the business name, and some of the less competitive keywords. This is something that can be rectified in the search engine promotion process.

Indexed Pages

Most pages of the website have been indexed, however most of the deeper level pages have not. This is probably due to poor navigation protocol evident in the current site, and can be rectified with better navigation and a sitemap.

Site Link Popularity

This number of incoming links (links from other websites) from Google is almost nonexistent. Yahoo! always accounts for more incoming links due to counting links from lesser ranking websites, so it shows more incoming links.

A fresh and aggressive linking strategy will be required to get the number of quality incoming links up.

Competitor Analysis

These reports gives a detailed picture of how the current Sample Business website compares to each of the main competitors for the more generic, Australian based keyphrases.

The two biggest competitors are Worldwide Business and Successful Business.

In Conclusion

Although the Sample Business website is outdated, it does have the advantage of having been around for 3 years, as time plays an important role in the search engine promotion process. The things that are holding it back at the moment are mostly related to the following:

  • Outdated content - fresh, often updated content is highly desirable to search engines
  • Lack of keywords present in the website text - rectified with new copy written with this in mind
  • Outdated coding and website construction practices - use of tables and excessive javascript code present in html files
  • Poor navigational systems - main navigation links are images instead of readable, indexable text, not giving easy access to most of the deeper level pages
  • No sitemap
  • No meta data - meta description and keywords, customised for each page or area of the site, are essential

With a new, search engine friendly design and coding, better navigation through styled text links and professionally written website content and meta keywords and descriptions, this site will be fully optimised and ready for the search engines to index and rank.

Coupled with an aggressive link building search engine promotion campaign over a number of months, we can expect this website to rank very well for not only specific keywords but also the more generic, international key phrases and terms as well.
